Who we are
Mater Africa NGO Nigeria is dedicated to providing humanitarian aid and support to the most vulnerable communities in Nigeria. Their mission focuses on several key areas:
1. Medical Care: Offering essential medical services to those in need, particularly women and children in rural and urban outskirts.
2. Education: Providing educational opportunities and resources to help young people and adults gain the skills they need for a better future.
3. Food Assistance: Ensuring that families have access to nutritious food to combat hunger and malnutrition.
4. Awareness and Advocacy: Documenting the conditions in Nigeria through films, documentaries, and reports to raise awareness and sensitize public opinion in the West.
5. Cultural Exchange: Organizing trips and pilgrimages to promote cultural understanding and exchange between Nigeria and other countries.
Mater Africa NGO consists of two associations: one based in Italy and one in Nigeria. The Italian association was founded in 8 by Alberto Cicala, a filmmaker from Novara, Italy, while the Nigerian NGO was founded in 2016 by the same person. The organization has initiated various projects, including a film school for young people in need and training programs in collaboration with Italian companies.
One of the significant projects is the School of Cinema Studies in Benin City, which was established with the help of UNIBEN and EBS TV. This school was funded by the Government of Piedmont of Italy and operated for four years, from 2009 to 2012. The aim was to provide young people with the opportunity to explore their passion for cinema and develop their skills through comprehensive training and hands-on experience.
During its operation, the School of Cinema Studies developed and produced 17 documentaries, fiction, shorts, and reportages with the students. Many of these works won awards at international film festivals, showcasing the talent and creativity of the young filmmakers.
Their commitment to improving the lives of women and children in villages and urban outskirts continues to drive their efforts in offering medical care, education, and food assistance. By documenting the conditions in Nigeria through films, documentaries, and reports, Mater Africa aims to raise awareness and sensitize public opinion in the West.
